Mandela granddaughter murder trial postponed

2011-03-17 10:51

The trial of Sizwe Mankazana, the driver of the car in which Mandela’s granddaughter Zenani was killed, was postponed in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today.

Defence advocate Kenny Oldwadge said they could not argue their case effectively without the furnishing of details related to the charges on the case docket.

State prosecutor Roger Mareume contested this by saying primary sources of evidence had been given to the accused.

“The details are adequate enough to prepare defence’s argument,” he said. Magistrate Simon Radasi was expected to rule on whether the objection by Mankazana’s lawyer would be upheld or not.

Zenani Zanethemba Nomasonto Mandela was killed in a car accident two days after her thirteenth birthday.

She was being driven home from the Soccer World Cup concert at Orlando Stadium on June 11 last year.

Mankazana originally faced a charge of drunken driving and another of culpable homicide, but the latter was later converted to murder.

The trial continues tomorrow.
