US President Barack Obama’s tribute of former president Nelson Mandela was the highlight of his memorial service for many South Africans.

But the heckling and booing of President Jacob Zuma spoiled the event for some who took part in a snap survey by City Press.

Facebook user Zandile Msimango said: “(Obama) spoke as if he spent so many years with Madiba. My lowlight, offcourse was the crowd who didn’t show respect, I mean that was memorial not a rally”.

Miena Seipati Phetwe Moagi said: (I’m watching from) home, highlights – Obama. lowlights – the desrespect”.

Equally enchanted by Obama’s speech was Ntobe Radebe. “Obama’s speech was a definate highlight for me, and the low was Zuma saying ‘mmmm”.

Mlulami Lhama was less forgiving of Zuma. “I liked when they booed that big head, they showed him his time is up.”

However, Mark Hayne was disgusted by the booing: “Booing and heckling is not expressing your freedom of speech, it is denying others the right to theirs..”.

Some people watched from the comfort of their homes while many said they were watching from work.

An Absa employee in the Johannesburg CBD said they took turns to watch the proceedings at FNB.

@blissdragon followed the action on radio, Twitter and through Whatsapping friends. “Enjoying the banter on social media.”

@PhilaKhale3 said: “We did very little (at work), glued to broadcast, shocked at how badly crowd behaved at times!” More views:
