The image of Mandela is one of many in a new exhibition

illustrating the eventful life of one of the world’s great leaders.

The majority of the photographs on display, some of which have

never been seen before, were donated to the museum by renowned photojournalist

Benny Gool.

The exhibition, the finishing touches of which were finalised

yesterday, is on show at what is now the Groot Drakenstein prison outside Paarl,

where Mandela took his first free steps after 27 years on February 11

Mandela’s letter of release from the prison is also expected to be

on display.

Two other exhibitions are being put together to commemorate 20

years of freedom, one at Parliament – on show for the state of the nation

address – and one at the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in Bisho.

Titled 20 years of Freedom – a Lifetime of Service, the exhibition

is the brainchild of the Nelson Mandela Museum and will be on show for at least

six months.
