The ANC electoral commission has banned the use of cellphones and “photographic equipment” at the voting booths.

ANC veteran and electoral commissioner Andrew Mlangeni asked members not to bring such gadgets to the polling booths, and threatened to seize them if delegates brought them.

Last week, the commission said it would bring a proposal for a ban of cellphones during voting to conference following complaints that some party power-brokers used the equipment to monitor how delegates vote. Those who are part of their faction would be expected to take pictures of their used ballots to show that they had voted for leaders on their slates.

Cellphones were not banned at the booths at the 2007 Polokwane conference.

Mlangeni also confirmed that vote-counting would be done manually.

Voting for the top six started around 12.30am today.
