A hostage situation at the Mangaung Correctional Centre outside Bloemfontein has been confirmed by prison officials.

G4S Africa head Andy Baker said prison management was dealing with the incident, but did not give more detail.

He said contingency measures designed to deal with hostage situations had been put in place.

Earlier, a local radio station reported four inmates took a female guard hostage this morning.

Last month, some 311 workers at the maximum security facility went on strike.

Prison management also had a prisoner riot to handle, which broke out in some sections a day earlier.

The prisoners burned blankets, broke toilets, windows and damaged some 40 porcelain basins they wanted to use as projectiles.
