Manhunt launched for farm murderers

2011-05-06 08:49

A manhunt is under way after two people were killed in a farm attack in Lephalale, Limpopo police said today.

Johanna Catherine Parkin (75) and farm worker Risimate Thomas Chabalala (45) were killed at Bafiaanshoek farm on Tuesday at 5.30pm, said Lieutenant-Colonel Mohale Ramatseba.

It appeared they had been stabbed to death.

A firearm was stolen during the attack, and “robbery had not been ruled out” as the motive for the attack, Ramatseba said.

The bodies were discovered by Parkin’s son.

“In the past farm attacks appeared to come in bursts, with these periods often lasting longer than the occasions in which there were no farm murders,” Christian Democratic Party (CDP) spokesperson Theunis Botha said in a statement.

He expressed the CDP’s condolences to Parkin and Tshabalala’s families.

No arrests had been made yet and police investigations were continuing, Ramatseba said.

On Saturday night, North West farmer Andre van der Merwe was murdered in his farm outside Ottosdal and his corpse dragged behind his bakkie.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said of Van der Merwe’s murder that although the brutality of the attack might suggest an “ulterior motive“, he could not confirm whether the suspects were known to Van der Merwe, who lived alone.
