Sindisiwe Manqele claims she killed hip-hop star Nkululeko “Flabba” Habedi in self-defence.

She was applying for bail at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, broadcaster eNCA reported today.

Manqele’s lawyer handed in a medical report showing multiple soft tissue injuries, the broadcaster reported.

She said in court papers she should be released on bail because there was no proof that she would disturb public order.

Habedi, a member of hip-hop group Skwatta Kamp, was stabbed to death at his Alexandra home early last Monday morning, allegedly by Manqele, who was thought to be his girlfriend.

Police said they were called to the house at 4am.

Family spokesperson and Flabba’s younger brother Tshepang Habedi said Flabba was stabbed once in the heart.

City Press reported that Manqele apparently told him she didn’t mean to kill his brother.

Today, curious onlookers watched as media set up cameras on the pavement outside the court, in the middle of the busy morning commute.

This was in contrast to the scene outside the court following Manqele’s first appearance last Monday, the same day Habedi was killed and she was arrested.

At the time, local residents clashed with a group of women and a man, understood to be Manqele’s relatives. The two groups traded insults, and the residents insisted Manqele should not be granted bail.
