Mapisa-Nqakula to intervene after violent protest

2013-08-28 14:29

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will lead a delegation to the Ekurhuleni metro to meet officials and military veterans following Monday’s violence at the East Rand Civic Centre.

Department director general Tsepe Motumi today condemned the violent protest at the civic centre, which accommodates the executive mayor, speaker, chief whip, staff, and political parties .

About 50 people were injured, while furniture was damaged and equipment stolen.

“Military veterans, like all the citizens of the country, have a constitutional and democratic right to protest. However, they should do so peacefully and within the confines of the law,” Motumi said.

Violence was not the appropriate way to air grievances.

“We understand and appreciate the frustrations raised about the fact these were protesting military veterans who said they had been promised by the Ekurhuleni metro to be provided with basic services, such as houses, jobs, etcetera, and that those promises have allegedly not been honoured,” he said.

Mapisa-Nqakula would visit the civic centre on Friday, and was expected to discuss the impasse with both the veterans and the metro.

“We appeal to those involved in the protest to be calm and exercise restraint,” Motumi said.
