March for rights of Zim prisoners

2011-03-18 11:01

A march will take place in Hillbrow on Monday to highlight the situation of six people arrested in Zimbabwe for treason after they met to discuss revolts in North Africa, the World Alliance for Citizen Participation said.

“They were organising a meeting last month to discuss the revolts and now face treason charges,” said alliance spokesperson Rowena McNaughton.

“Each week more and more people are being detained and many continue to be charged for spurious reasons.

We want to send a message to dictators everywhere that an injury to one is an injury to all,” she said.

People would gather in support on Human Rights Day to demand the Zimbabwean government drop all charges against the six and release them and any other political prisoners.

The six were released on bail yesterday. They had been arrested with 19 others who have since been released.

The march would start at 11am on the corner of Pretorius and Banket streets in Hillbrow and was expected to end at the Hillbrow Theatre, on the corner of Kaptein and Twist streets.

The march was organised by, among others, the alliance, the Zimbabwe Solidarity Forum, Movement for Democratic Change Johannesburg Youth assembly, Amnesty International and the Freedom of Expression Institute, McNaughton said.

Solidarity demonstrations would also take place in other cities such as New York and London.
