Marikana workers, media at odds

2012-09-18 10:55

Representatives of striking workers at Lonmin’s Marikana mine barred the media from covering a meeting at the Wonderkop stadium.

The representatives accosted journalists as they tried to enter the venue earlier today where they were being briefed on wage negotiations under way in Mooinooi, about 20km away.

The workers are apparently unhappy about a picture published by the Sunday Times at the weekend, in which a resident is seen carrying a firearm near a shack at Nkaneng informal settlement.

They were also dissatisfied with reports by eNews Channel Africa’s on a renewed wage demand, which they say compromise their case against Lonmin.

Relations between the media and the workers have been frosty since the strike began last month, when leaders instructed the striking workers not to speak to journalists.

There has been no communication from the workers’ leaders with regards to the progress in negotiations.

The workers are expected to meet again at 4pm at the stadium.

One of the leaders who came to tell the media they were not welcome, told journalists they should leave and go to a fried chicken outlet to take advantage of the specials there today.
