One of the most popular contestants on the local version of MasterChef has died.

According to Netwerk24, Sarel Loots – or Sarel van Sabie, as he was known to fans – died of a heart attack early this morning.

His family is still waiting for the official results of a postmortem.

Sarel was one of the contestants on the popular reality show in 2012. He was still sharing recipes on his Facebook and Twitter profiles last night.

Sarel’s Facebook page was flooded with messages from his fans this morning.

“With great loss we heard of your passing this morning. Big loss [for] many. Deepest sympathies to your family and loved ones,” Llewellyn Sharon Trask? wrote.

Renata Naidoo wrote; “RIP Sarel. We are definitely going to miss your recipes. You were really an inspiration to me when I tried out for MasterChef!”

Loots endured himself to viewers when he finished fourth in the show’s inaugural series, which was won by Deena Naidoo.

Loots was eliminated from the MasterChef kitchen after forgetting an integral part of his dish in the elimination test.

The task was to recreate a roasted duck breast with hazelnut milk gel, confit duck pastilla and honey roasted figs dish.

Loots forgot about the gel and served his dish without it, which cost him his place in the competition.

DStv viewers also saw Loots on kykNET’s popular food programme Kokkedoor last year.
