The politics of boxing beats the politics of politics, says former ANC treasurer Mathews Phosa.

Phosa today announced his new-found passion, boxing, at a press conference in Pretoria. He has been appointed honorary president of the World Boxing Federation (WBF).

The qualified lawyer expressed his gratitude to WBF president Howard Goldberg and said he remained a loyal member of the ANC.

“The invitation came as a great surprise, but I will make my contribution to promote boxing in the country, the continent and the world,” he said.

“I, however, remain a loyal member of the ANC through and through.”

He has since endorsed the current ANC leadership despite losing to Cyril Ramaphosa for the position of deputy president at Mangaung in 2012.

Phosa said: “I support and respect the current leadership of the ANC. You must agree to be led – that’s leadership.

“I’m a leader on the ground level and besides, it doesn’t mean one has to be on the NEC to lead.”

He believes the ruling party will win the May 7 elections “comfortably” and those who are saying the ANC will lose Gauteng will eat humble pie.

“They [critics] have said it before and it did not happen. Allow the voters to speak first, but rest assured the ANC will win comfortably,” he said.
