Mayoral bodyguards appear for blue-light shooting

2013-10-15 11:06

Two mayoral bodyguards have appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on attempted murder charges.

The two – Thulasizwe Mbanjwa and Sthembiso Mokoena – are alleged to have opened fire on a motorist on the N3 last week when they were escorting Umgungungdlovu district mayor Yusuf Bhamjee.

The Witness newspaper reported that the men’s lawyer Sphiwe Mncwango told the court yesterday that “my clients believed that the mayor’s life was in danger” and were therefore entitled to shoot at the motorist.

The two men were granted bail of R5 000 each and Magistrate Wendolyn Robinson postponed the case to November 18 or further investigation.
