Mbalula bids farewell to SA U-23s

2011-11-23 13:07

Sports and recreation minister Fikile Mbalula today bid farewell to the national Under 23 team ahead of their departure to the Caf Under-23 Championship starting in Morocco on Saturday.

Mbalula said this was a culture and ritual that “no national team should leave the country without being given the honour”.

He said the team was in a good state to do the country proud in their bid for the 2012 London Olympic qualification.

Mbalula encouraged the team to emulate the success of Nigeria who won the Olympic gold in 1996.

Safa president Kirsten Nematandani was also at the team’s hotel in Kempton Park.

He thanked all the clubs for releasing the players and also conveyed his message of support to the team.

Coach Shakes Mashaba promised that the team would do well at the eight-nation tournament where the top three nations will get an automatic berth at the Olympics.

The fourth-placed team will face a side from Asia.
