Mbatha trial postponed again

2009-11-13 10:17

ALLEGED crime mastermind William Mbatha will have to wait a little

longer to hear if he will be granted bail.

The Pretoria socialite, known for his love of flashy clothes and

expensive taste in cars and drinks, faces a string of charges, including

robbery, robbery with aggravating circumstances, car theft and house

During court proceedings today, Mbatha’s lawyer advocate Jack

Gerber accused the prosecution of using delaying tactics.

“The state had sufficient time to wrap up this case, but they have

been introducing new evidence. I want to make a submission to this court that

there is something untoward about these charges against Mr Mbatha” said

Magistrate SB Mosaka urged the prosecution and state to disclose

information to avoid surprises during court proceedings. “Let us not surprise

each other with new evidence, the person who is suffering in the process is the

accused,” said Mosaka.

Mbatha and his co-accused Neo Mokone made an appearance in the same

court on a different charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The case was postponed to November 27 for further evidence while

his bail application hearing with Mokone will be heard on November 18.

Mbatha has been in police custody since July 29.

His bail hearing application has been postponed five times.
