Media change in our lifetime

2013-09-29 14:00

The report, which was released on Friday and focuses on the transformation of print and digital media, has given the industry a tool for self-introspection.

With its hard-hitting findings and recommendations, it could be the one thing that the media needs to learn, reflect on and implement for it to transform for good.

The 100-page report found some pockets of improvements as determined by BBBEE codes in the fields of socioeconomic development, preferential procurement and some instances of enterprise development.

But it was scathing on the real test of transformation: control and ownership, skills development and employment equity.

To address these, the report has identified digital media “as the new game-changer for transformation and a frontier for media development”.

Among others, it recommends that all companies meet the generic scorecard black ownership target of 25% plus one within three years and that at least half of board members must be black, with half of those being women.

It further suggests that companies must prioritise skills development. It also suggests that government must move quickly to ensure 100% broadband internet penetration by 2020 if SA is to keep up with the rest of the world.
