Mediator arrives in Ivory Coast

2011-01-03 11:28

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the African Union mediator in Ivory Coast’s crisis, arrived in Abidjan today to try to persuade defiant incumbent Laurent Gbagbo to step down, an AFP photographer said.

Odinga was to be joined today by three regional presidents, Benin’s Boni Yayi, Sierra Leone’s Ernest Koroma and Cape Verde’s Pedro Pires, representing the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States.

They have so far failed to convince Gbagbo to step down following a disputed November 28 presidential election despite the community of states brandishing the threat of military intervention to oust him if mediation fails.
