Meet the men of God

Barnabas Lekganyane
The biggest cheese of them all is undoubtedly Lekganyane, the spiritual leader of Mzansi’s biggest Christian denomination, the Zion Christian Church. The church has 6 million followers in more than 4 000 parishes.

Not only is Lekganyane the big boss, he’s also a mediator between the congregation and God, and claims to perform supernatural acts.

Vimbeni Shembe
Shembe of the Nazareth Baptist Church recently passed away. The church has 4?million followers, most of whom are Zulu. Whoever fills Shembe’s shoes is guaranteed a special place.

Clayton Modise

The International Pentecostal Church was founded in Meadowlands, Soweto, in 1962 by Frederick Modise (or as his followers called him The Comforter), who died in 1998.

The church has 3 million members across the country and also operates in Namibia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Clayton’s brother-in-law, Bobo Bethuel Modise, has formed a splinter group called the International Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Fred Roberts

Each Sunday, the Durban Christian Centre dome houses thousands of people who come to listen to Pastor Roberts. He heads one of the largest interdenominational, non-racial churches in South Africa, with 25 000 members. His unmistakable “Jesus Dome” in Durban makes Roberts’ ministry a striking one.

Pastor Vusi Dube

He is known for ordaining President Jacob Zuma as a pastor in his Christian eThekweni Community Church. The church is attended by gospel stars Rebecca Malope and Hlengiwe Mhlaba, DJ Tira and L’vovo Derrango, among others.

According to its website, the church “was formed to empower African black people to take their position of influence in the global arena”. The naff dresser juggles his pastoral duties with being an MP in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.

Ray McCauley

What more can you say about the man who goes by the name Raynor? McCauley is a former champion body builder, a former Mr South Africa and third-place runner-up for the Mr Universe body building championship in 1974, the year Arnold Schwarzenegger won the title.

His Rhema church has a membership of 45 000. Followers include businesswoman Basetsana Kumalo and a few prominent celebrities and businesspeople. It’s no wonder the church rakes in about R70 million yearly from tithes and offerings.

Pastor Chris

Like Madonna, Pastor Chris goes by his first name. He is a famous Nigerian televangelist after all. The scandal-ridden pastor is the founding president of Believers’ LoveWorld Incorporated, also known as “Christ Embassy”, which is headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, with a few satellite churches in South Africa. The pastor also makes serious money from his other business interests, which include banking, publishing, broadcasting, entertainment and the hospitality industries. His church building in Nigeria is the biggest in the world. Seriously.

Reverend Benjamin Dube
Most people know him as a singer, but Reverend Benjamin Dube is also a full-time minister at a church in the heart of Vosloorus called High Praise Centre, with satellite churches located in Nelspruit, Kwa-Ndebele and Durban.

Who wants to stay away from a church where you get to meet a celebrity and get a free concert while you’re at it? This guy has shared preaching platforms with Bishop TD Jakes, Bishop John Francis, Bishop Tudor Bismark, Kirk Franklin, Andraé Crouch, Israel Houghton, and many other renowned speakers and musicians. His High Praise Centre currently has 2 000 members.

Pastor Jerome Liberty

Broke and don’t know how to get out of debt? You really don’t need to go to a financial adviser when you have Pastor Jerome, the founder of Victory Ministry International, as your guide.

He’s a businessman from Port Elizabeth, believes he has “the heart and divine assignment to equip the Body of Christ in the area of finances with the Victory in Finance meetings”. It helps that he’s rich, so whatever he’s doing it’s working. He teaches his church about issues related to debt.

Prophet Paseka Motsoeneng

Soweto TV viewers have long been entertained by the spectacle put on by Pastor Mboro, as Motsoeneng is known by viewers and followers. All these miraculous healings take place at the Incredible Happenings Ministry in Katlehong, East Rand.

Alternately, if you can’t make it to the church, Mboro does offer DVD healings. You only have to touch your TV screen and .?.?. voila! Saves you time and petrol money. All these healings have ultimately given Mboro a lavish lifestyle, complete with bodyguards.

Apostle Simon Mokoena

Apostle Mokoena is a man of diverse talents. On his website, he describes himself as “an author, musician, preacher, teacher, humanitarian, poet and TV presenter”. What the founder of the nationwide Tyrannus Apostolic Church fails to mention is that he has a spectacular line of shoes, clothing and accessories – such as belts and cuff links – and even deodorants under his church brand.

This comes as no surprise because the man makes it a point to always look outstanding in his all-white suit, which contrasts nicely in a stadium filled with red-clad followers. He also makes sure to travel in style in a fleet of white Mercedes-Benzes and a crew of bodyguards.
