Memorial service for Tatane

2011-04-20 09:02

A memorial service will be held in Meqheleng today for slain Ficksburg protester Andries Tatane.

The service was expected to be held in a community hall at 3pm.

Tatane was shot and beaten to death, allegedly by police, in front of the offices of the Setsoto local municipality in Ficksburg during a protest march over service delivery.

Six policemen have since appeared in court – two on a charge of murder, and four on a charge of assault.

They were expected to appear again in the Ficksburg regional court next week.

The Free State government’s executive committee was believed to be meeting today to discuss the service delivery problems in the Ficksburg/Meqheleng community.

In discussions with the Meqheleng Concerned Citizens last week, Free State MEC for cooperative governance Mamiki Qabathe indicated that there would be feedback on many of the issues by the end of this week.
