Men busted for false hijacking report

2010-11-17 12:29

Three men have been arrested in Isipingo outside Durban for falsely reporting that their truck was hijacked.

“On the night of November 15, a case of truckjacking was reported to the Isipingo police. The truck was a delivery truck for Frimax, which was transporting Simba chips to the value of R50?000,” said Captain Thulani Zwane.

“It was alleged by the driver that he was parked on Old Main Road in Isipingo at 2pm when he was approached by three men who pointed a firearm at him.

“The men then got into the vehicle and drove to Kwamakhutha, where they assaulted the driver and his two assistants.”

The driver told the police that they managed to escape and returned to Old Main Road. The truck was later recovered on the same night in Folweni.

Zwane added: “On November 16, the police requested a trip sheet from the company manager. It was established from the trip sheet that the truck was not in the Isipingo area at the time that it was reported to have been hijacked.”

The driver and his assistants were then interviewed and “they confessed to setting up the crime so that they could sell off the chips that they were delivering to their customers”.

The men allegedly sold the chips in the Durban area. The consignment of Simba chips was recovered by the police and returned to its lawful owners.

Zwane said the driver of the truck and his two assistants would face charges of defeating the ends of justice before the Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
