Men die in hospital after pupils assault them for mugging

Two men who were allegedly assaulted by a group of school pupils for snatching a woman’s bag have died of their injuries in hospital.

Pupils from Kusasalethu Secondary School in Embalenhle township near Secunda allegedly attacked the men, who were in their mid-20s, after the frightened 30-year-old woman ran screaming into the school yesterday asking for help.

The men allegedly grabbed the woman’s bag at a sports field and ran to abandoned buildings on the school premises. They tried to hide in the ceiling but the pupils found them.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said police were investigating two murder cases and robbery, but no one has been arrested.

“The information we got is that the woman was walking near the school when the robbers snatched her bag. She ran to the school and a large group of learners chased the two men and assaulted them. Other learners were watching the incident,” said Mohlala.

“The police and an ambulance were called to the scene and the two men were taken to Evander Hospital. They died in hospital yesterday,” he added.

The Mpumalanga department of education said it had not heard of the incident when contacted by City Press today, but promised to investigate.

“The department is not aware of the incident at Kusasalethu Secondary School. We are however going to investigate the matter. We will also deploy officials from inclusive education to assess the learners and give them counselling,” said department spokesperson Gerald Sambo.

Video footage taken by an eyewitness shows a bloodied man on a stretcher being treated by paramedics while he groans and tells them to leave him alone.
