Meshoe steps down ‘temporarily’

2013-06-14 09:17

African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) leader Kenneth Meshoe plans to “temporarily” step down as an MP, but will not be resigning, leaving politics, or permanently giving up his position in the party.

“I can confirm that I will be stepping down ‘temporarily’ from Parliament,” he said yesterday in a statement.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Meshoe would “resign from Parliament”.

However, Meshoe said he would not be leaving.

“I wish to emphasise that I will not be stepping down as leader of the African Christian Democratic Party, or leaving politics.”

Meshoe has been an MP since 1994.

He said his reasons for stepping down had been discussed with the ACDP’s leadership in January.

“I am convinced that this decision is in the best interest of the ACDP. A press conference will be held in Parliament next week Thursday, where more details will be given and my interim replacement formally introduced.”
