MetroFM splashes out in lead-up to yearly awards

2011-11-05 11:00

SABC radio station MetroFM must be rolling in dough if their constant parties are anything to go by. Since October, they’ve been on a roll, celebrating one thing or another to do with their yearly music awards.

They hosted guests in Nelspruit for five days, held a Top Five nominees soiree at the Pyramid Day Spa and then a media dinner at the swanky Wall Street restaurant in Sandton.

On Thursday, they didn’t spare any expenses either when they hosted a Top Three nominee announcement breakfast and hosted about 150 people at the posh Fairways Hotel and Spa in Randburg, north of Joburg.

The set-up rivalled any A-list wedding reception, complete with a table centre piece, embroidered tablecloths and
uniformed waiters.

I am not complaining because I loved the English breakfast and for those with finer taste buds, there was an option of salmon, oysters and haddock, which could be washed down with Moët & Chandon.

Among the guests were singers Nothende, Swazi Dlamini, jazz artist Kunle Ayo, MetroFM’s Melanie Bala and Chriselda Kananda, and SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago.

Our entertainment, the Kwela Tebza brothers, wore kurtas recycled from Khanyi Mbau’s party. Zamajobe, who sang Ndawo Yami, donned a cute tangerine dress. Pity it showed her underwear.

The nominations were led by rapper AKA, with five nods. Close on his tail was music group Micasa and Loliwe singer Zahara, each with four nominations.

Trailing behind were Durban boys Big Nuz, with three nominations.Let’s meet at the actual awards this time on November 26 at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, shall we?
