Metropolitan SA schools U-16 kicks off

2011-10-01 21:50

The draw for the Metropolitan South Africa Schools Football Association (Safsa) Under-16 Cup was conducted this week.
The tournament will take place in Mamelodi, Tshwane, from October 5 to 8.

Last year’s event was clinched by Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sports School.

Their ultimate prize was a ticket to the International Soccer Federation Schools World Championships in Brazil, which was played earlier this year.

The tournament is run in three phases leading up to the national play-offs, which includes district/zonal, regional and provincial phases.

The participating schools are registered with the education department across 1 016 designated districts.

The two top teams that emerge from each district enter a knock-out competition to qualify for the intense provincial phase.

Then there will be another battle in the provincial phase with the top two teams in each of the nine provinces proceeding to the national play-offs.

Said Metropolitan Retail chief executive Phillip Matlakala: “The development of soccer remains an important focus for Metropolitan, which has been supporting youth soccer for more than 20 years through its various properties.

“Integral to our sponsorship is life skills orientation and promotion of a code of conduct aimed at fostering a sense of social responsibility and community empowerment.”

Said Safsa president Mandla “Shoes” Mazibuko: “The teams who have made it through to the national finals are of the highest calibre.

“Through hard work and determination, they have shown they have what it takes to get to the top. We anticipate an exciting finish, with maybe a few surprises.”

All matches will be played at the Muckleuneck Stadium (October 5-6) and Mamelodi Central Grounds (October 7-8) in Mamelodi, Tshwane.
