Los Angeles – USA Swimming has suspended Michael Phelps for six months from competition, the national governing body of competitive swimming said.

The winner of 22 Olympic medals was also banned from the 2015 Fina World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia, next August, the group said yesterday.

“Michael’s conduct was serious and required significant consequences,” said USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus.

On September 30, the 29-year-old swimmer was arrested and charged with drink-driving in his hometown of Baltimore. A breathalyser revealed Phelps had a blood alcohol level of 0.14, well over the state’s 0.08 limit, according to authorities.

On Sunday, Phelps announced he would be seeking help.

“I’m going to take some time away to attend a programme,” Phelps posted on Twitter.

In 2004, Phelps was sentenced to 18 months probation after pleading guilty to drink-driving and in 2009, US Swimming suspended him for three months after a photo surfaced of the swimmer using a marijuana pipe.
