Ministers declare war on booze

2011-09-10 16:33

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has declared war on alcohol.

“According to the World Health Organisation, after HIV/Aids, violence kills the most people worldwide and 88% of violence is self-directed and interpersonal, with alcohol playing a leading role in this,” he told City Press on Friday.

The interministerial committee on combating substance abuse, which is led by Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini, will deliver its draft anti-substance abuse programme of action to Cabinet on Tuesday.

On Friday Dlamini said the first action to reduce alcohol-related harm and crime should be to lower the overall alcohol intake of the population.

“Our high consumption levels are driven by the fact that alcohol is relatively cheap in South Africa and readily available in thousands of legal and illegal outlets. It is actively and robustly marketed by the alcohol industry,” she said.

Motsoaledi said it was only a matter of time before alcohol advertising was banned.
