Mmusi Maimane DA’s choice for Gauteng premier

2013-08-09 18:01

DA spokesperson Mmusi Maimane was elected by the party to be its candidate for the Gauteng premiership in next year’s general elections.

Maimane, who is also a deputy federal chair of the party, was elected above member of the Gauteng legislature Jack Bloom, who also made himself available for the position.

Party insiders say it was a close race but the DA’s premier selection panel chose Maimane.

In 2011 he entered politics by standing as the party’s mayoral candidate in Johannesburg.

Gauteng is the DA’s biggest battleground in next year’s elections, with R100 million of its estimated R173 million elections budget going to the province, where the ANC’s majority has been slowly decreasing in recent years.

Maimane was the first premier candidate to be chosen by the party, with the other provinces expected to follow suit in the next few weeks.

He will be up against an unknown ANC candidate – the ruling party doesn’t usually announce their premier candidates ahead of elections.

In a statement today the DA didn’t comment on the process, but simply gave Maimane’s biography.

Maimane said in a press release the party would, “from today until election day 2014 ... campaign tirelessly in every corner and street of this province. We know that we can win Gauteng.”

He said he would be holding a press conference on Sunday to brief the media about the DA’s campaign plans in the province.
