Mokoena heads SA athletics team to World Champs

Athletics South Africa (ASA) today named a four-member team for the IAAF World Indoor Championships which takes off in Turkey from March 9-11.

The team is comprised of accomplished long jumper Khotso Mokoena, Elroy Gelant (3000m), Lehann Fourie (60m hurdles) and Burger Lamprechts (shot put).

Former 800m world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi was invited by the IAAF but he told City Press last week that he gave the event a miss so as to start gradually in local races.

Mokoena, the 2008 world indoor champion, experienced a rough patch last year after failing to go beyond the qualifying stages during the IAAF World Championships in South Korea.

He was overshadowed by rising jumper Luvo Manyonga, who finished fifth in his maiden participation at the world champs.
Mokoena has already been to two international meetings this year, including netting a season best of 8.24m in Moscow and a 7.98m at the PSD Bank Meeting in Germany.

He finished as a runner-up at both events last month.

African champion in 110m hurdles Fourie will mark his second participation at the world indoors.

Lamprechts posted 20.12m at the Yellow Pages Inter-provincial on Saturday to earn his berth in the team while Gelant ran a 7:41.59 personal best in France in June last year to qualify for the Instanbul, Trukey competition.
