South African long distance runner Stephen Mokoka became the first athlete to dip under the Olympic A-standard time when he clinched the 10 000m final on day 1 of the Yellow Pages SA Senior Championships at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

The Athletics Gauteng North runner breezed home in 27.40.73 ahead of his provincial teammate Gladwin Mzazi in cool conditions in the windy city.

Mzazi stopped the clock at 28:20.18, holding off Two Oceans half marathon winner Xolisa Tyali who finished third (28:29.20).

Mokoka of Transnet Athletics Club has also ran an A-standard qualifying mark in the marathon with the leading time of 2:10.29 among a group of five runners that are queuing for Olympic berths in the 42km squad to London.

The others are Coolboy Ngamole, Lusapho April, Hendrick Ramaala and Othaniel Phahlane who all ran under the 2:15 Olympic A-standard.
