The mother of murdered kidnap victim Louise de Waal has said she saw pictures of the suspect on her daughter’s phone, according to Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner of detective services Tebello Mosikili.

“The mother of the victim told people that she saw pictures of the suspect on the victim’s phone, but police cannot confirm that,” Mosikili said.

De Waal was kidnapped on her way to school in White Ridge, Florida, on the West Rand yesterday morning.

Mosikili said the firearm used to threaten De Waal and the vehicle she was kidnapped in were found at the suspect’s home, along with the girl’s school bag.

The suspected body of De Waal was found at a farm in Magaliesberg yesterday. Eyewitness News has since reported DNA tests confirmed that the body was that of De Waal’s.

Gauteng acting provincial commissioner Nobesuthu Masiye said police could not confirm whether the suspect was the “Sunday serial rapist”, but they were investigating 10 similar cases, which have been centralised in Gauteng and will be investigated by Warrant Officer Peet du Toit of the Krugersdorp Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

Du Toit said the suspect’s modus operandi was similar to that of the Sunday rapist, which included taking items from the victims.“He would take their shoes to prevent them from running away and also take mementos from the girls, like their hair and panties,” he said.
