Mom sentenced to 12 years for killing her five kids

Venolia Siwa from Pampierstad in the Northern Cape has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for murdering her five children.

She appeared in the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court today.

Earlier this year, Siwa was found guilty of killing her five children in Pampierstad in October last year.

In a statement read in court with her conviction, Siwa said she stabbed four of the children – disabled Sizwe (13), Lukanyo (10), Edward (5) and Naledi (4) with a knife. She said she drowned the youngest, Reatlegile (2).

Thotoane Shale, Free State and North West regional spokesperson for Legal Aid South Africa, said Siwa was sentenced for “all charges of murder; instead of serving a harsh series of life sentences for each count”.
