Mom tries to poison self, 3 kids

2010-10-07 07:13

A Kempton Park woman has attempted to poison herself and her three young children with pesticide.

“A 25-year-old mother tragically lost her husband two months ago and today she decided to end it all,” Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

“It is believed that she gave her three children, aged three, five and eight, two-step poison at 5.30pm yesterday before taking the poison herself.”

Their husband and father had died of a heart attack two months ago.

Two-step is an organophosphate, or pesticide. One of the effects on the body is to slow the heart down until it eventually stops, Botha said.

Paramedics stabilised the four before taking them to Tembisa hospital. They were still in a critical condition at 9pm.

“It’s quite ironic that the same paramedic who attended to the husband was the one who first arrived at the scene today (yesterday).”

Police could not immediately confirm the incident. It was also not known how the crime was discovered.
