More arrests are expected in the case of a group of rightwing extremists who allegedly hatched a plan to bomb the ANC’s Mangaung conference, National Police Commissioner Mangwashi Phiyega has said.

Mark Trollip, Johan Prinsloo, Martin Keevy and Hein Boonzaaier appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on charges of terrorism and treason earlier this week.

Phiyega would not say how many arrests were expected. “I cannot say much more than that because the case is sub judice and the investigation is still ongoing,” she said.

Phiyega said this case and the deployment of the South African Defence Force (SANDF) were not related.

She said the SANDF forms part of the national and provincial joint operational and intelligence structure responsible for policing big events such as the Mangaung conference.

Phiyega said the crime rate usually rises during events like these but it was not the case this week.
