Two more charges have been added to the assault case of singer Kelly Khumalo and her younger sister, Zandi Khumalo.

Kelly and Zandi were initially charged with common assault after they allegedly assaulted Mandisa, the wife of Orlando Pirates goalie Senzo Meyiwa, in a love-triangle dispute last month.

But charges of malicious damage to property and reckless driving were also added to their charge sheet by the National Prosecution Authority (NPA).

In addition, the common assault charge, which was less serious, has also been commuted to the more serious charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

NPA regional spokesperson Phindi Louw confirmed the matter in an interview with reporters outside the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court where the two briefly appeared this morning.

Their case was postponed to October 31 when they are expected to plead.

Louw said the Khumalos, who were released on R500 bail each last night, allegedly damaged the side mirror of Mandisa’s BMW 1 series during the fracas, which occurred on Empire Road near the M1 South highway.

“It is alleged that there was a road rage (incident) during which the suspects assaulted the wife of Senzo Meyiwa and also damaged the side mirror of her car,” she said.

Louw also did not rule out the possibility that Meyiwa could be charged with defeating the ends of justice for refusing to depose a witness statement.

“We have given him time to make a statement and we hope he will cooperate and the matter does not have to go that far,” she said when asked if they would arrest the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper for refusing to cooperate with the police.

Earlier, Kelly was angry when a photojournalist fell on to her Golf 5 GTi and broke its front bumper while he was jostling with other photographers to get the best shot of the well-dressed singer while she was leaving the court premises.
