More staff turmoil at SABC

2009-09-10 16:07

SABC staffers are up in arms over the suspension of the head of

human capital Patience Naves allegedly for non-performance.

“How do you suspend someone whom you gave a huge bonus to just last

year?” said a source at the broadcaster.

But SABC spokesperson Kaiser Kganyago said Naves had been placed

on “special leave” which is different to suspension. He added that the issue was an internal matter and would be handled

as such.

Naves has been replaced by current head of group strategy and risk,

Sipho Sithole, whom unions accuse of a serious conflict of interest. The unions charge that he uses the SABC to promote artists managed

by his company, Native Rhythms.

But Kganyago said the allegations against Sithole had nothing to do

with the current issue, adding that he had ample human resources

experience. The general feeling in the corridors of the SABC is that Sithole

should rather have been suspended.

Naves was suspended by chief peoples officer Phumelele

Ntombela-Nzimande, who is accused of authorising the purchase of T-shirts worth

R95? 000.

acting group chief executive, Gab Mampone, or Ntombela-Nzimande? It is a widely held view that Ntombela-Nzimande “runs the

Labour sources also charge that the interim board cannot touch her

as it claims it does not have the powers to act against her.

While it is appreciated that the interim board has made significant

strides in stabilising the cash strapped broadcaster, its lack of action against

Ntombela-Nzimande is confusing, said a labour source.
