Mother, son in court over massacre

A mother and son – suspects in the killing of eight people in Marianhill, KwaZulu-Natal – appeared briefly in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court today.

Irene Ngubane (38) and her son, Qweba (21), were arrested on Wednesday for the alleged massacre of eight people in Mpola, near Marianhill.

On Monday a gang allegedly attacked the Mabhida family home and killed Coshela Mabhida (48), his wife, Angelina (58), their daughter, Sindi (25), and her four children: Njabulo (9), Sphesihle (7), Owami (6), and nine-month-old Andiswa.

Their burnt bodies were found in different corners of the two-room house after it was set alight.The two suspects are neighbours of the Mabhida family.

The case was postponed to December 23 for further investigation.Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela said Qweba was called in for questioning after which his mother was arrested.

The attack comes two months after 10 people were killed in Shongweni and Tshelimnyama in two separate incidents in October.

Six people were killed in two different homes at Shongweni, and four people were killed in an attack at Tshelimnyama within 72 hours after the Shongweni incident.

The motive for the Mabhida killings has not yet been divulged.

National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele’s office plans to hold meetings with the communities of Inchanga, Dassenhoek and the surrounding areas to resolves tensions.
