Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has cancelled his planned trip to former president Nelson Mandela’s Eastern Cape home this afternoon.

Motlanthe was due to visit the veteran statesman in Qunu as part of his Eastern Cape itinerary, where he is also expected to meet with the ANC structures in the OR Tambo region.

An ANC Youth League source close to the visit said the cancellation had to do with “internal presidency issues” and “protocols”, but said they were still managing the situation in communication with Motlanthe’s office.

However, Motlanthe’s spokesperson, Thabo Masebe, denied that the cancellation had any thing to do with protocols.

He said the deputy president had cancelled the Mandela visit because he had other official duties to attend to as the acting president.

President Jacob Zuma is attending a SADC meeting in Tanzania.

The Eastern Cape endorsed Zuma’s second term at its recent nominations conference, where Zuma got 392 votes.

Motlanthe, who is contesting Zuma for party presidency in Mangaung, got 211 votes.
