Motorists to pay carbon emissions tax from September

2010-02-17 12:40

MOTORISTS and car buyers face an increase in tax burden.

From September, vehicle buyers will be slapped with a value-based

carbon emissions tax on new passenger cars. Consumers who purchase vehicles with

higher carbon emissions will pay higher taxes while cars with low emissions will

attract lower taxes or no taxes at all.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan also proposed an increase of 25.5c

a litre to the fuel levy.

“This includes a 7.5c a litre increase to contribute to the funding

of a new multi-product petroleum pipeline between Durban and Gauteng, and an

increase of 8c a litre in the road accident fund levy,” he said.

As expected, excise duties on tobacco and alcoholic products will

be increased. Gamblers also face higher taxes.

“I propose to review the current treatment of winnings in the hands

of gamblers as exempt from personal income tax. Measures will be considered to

limit opportunities for money laundering, unlicensed online gambling and

others,” Gordhan said.
