Motshekga to brief Zuma on Northern Cape crisis

2012-09-19 09:47

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to brief President Jacob Zuma on the education crisis in the Northern Cape today, her spokesperson, Hope Mokgatlhe, has said.

More than 40 schools have been closed down in the second biggest region in the province, John Taolo Gaetsewe, leaving thousands of kids locked out of their classrooms.

Motshekga visited the Kuruman area yesterday where the majority of schools that have been closed down are situated.

The schools, in several villages within the district, have been closed by residents who are demanding tarred access roads.

Three schools in Olifantshoek have also been affected.

Residents there are demanding the resignation of the mayor.

Motshekga told principles and members of school governing bodies in the district to go back to their communities and convince them to reopen schools closed down by residents.

She did not visit Olifantshoek where the house of a Grade 12 learner was petrol-bombed last week.
