Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has appointed a new council to oversee the governance of the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS).

"We welcome the appointment of the new council," said CMS acting CEO and registrar Daniel Lehutjo today.

"We look forward to the insight and expertise from the new council as they help direct the regulator in achieving its vision of striving to be a fair custodian of equitable access to medical schemes in order to support the improvement of universal access to health care."

Professor Yosuf Veriava was re-appointed chairperson of the council.

Council members are appointed on a part-time basis for a period of up to three years.

The CMS regulates the medical schemes industry which has about 83 medical schemes in South Africa with around 8 776 279 beneficiaries.

These schemes have a total annual contribution flow of about R129.8 billion.
