Mountain biking: Jozi trails

2014-06-15 15:00

Okay, so you’ve bought a mountain bike and you have all the gear but no idea where to ride.

Luckily, the City of Gold is full of mountain biking spots waiting for you and your iron horse to unleash your hidden talent.

Most trails in and around Jozi are suitable for all skill levels and have secure parking and coffee shops to make it all worthwhile. Here are just three of my favourites:

.?The Braamfontein Spruit

There are few cities in the world that have mountain biking trails running through the heart of the suburbs and city.

The Braamfontein Spruit, more affectionately known as The Spruit, provides an incredible network of informal riding trails.

These trails have been shaped by walkers and what we call “trail fairies”, who carve trails in the night for all to enjoy.

Like I said, the trails on the famous Spruit are not formalised and you will need to ride with someone who knows how to link the vast network of paths between various parks. Once you get to know the trails, you will find they are perfect for all levels.

The route goes through Alberts Farm, Emmarentia and Delta Park, and then extends all the way to Sunninghill alongside the actual spruit.

There are some good, secure parking places at Emmarentia and Delta Park, and both are suitable for the whole family.

If you don’t have anyone to ride with, simply go to the parking lot at Emmarentia or Delta Park and ride around – you will soon meet other riders who will be willing to show you the way.

.?Central Park Trails

Central Park Trails is 5km (as the crow flies) from Sandton, situated in the Modderfontein Nature Reserve.

It is in this spectacular setting that a dedicated team has managed to design and create a haven for mountain bikers, trail runners and walkers.

Riders can be sure that every month a new and exciting addition will be added to the trails.

The trails are situated within a security fence that is patrolled 24 hours a day. Visit for more information.

.?PWC Cycle Park

This great park is situated just off Main Road in Bryanston.

It is a wonderful place to bring family and friends to experience mountain biking on all levels. It’s situated in a safe and secure environment.

The park has purpose-built international standard trails that will give both beginners and advanced riders a thrill. Go to for more information.

After riding a few trails, you will soon want more. Visit to take a look at a comprehensive trail guide that covers the entire country.
