There has been mixed reaction to the booing of President Jacob Zuma at the FNB Stadium during former president Nelson Mandela’s memorial service.

A group of young men from Naledi in Soweto said although they were supporters of the ANC, Zuma had disappointed them.

“We elected Zuma in 2009 because we thought he was one of us. But he disappointed [us] when he spent more than R200 million of taxpayers’ money at his home,” said Thabo Mokone (33).

Tshepo Mohale (28), also from Naledi, agreed, saying: “I no longer consider Zuma as my president because of the embarrassing things he always does.

“I have defended him on so many things but the Nkandla story and e-tolls are indefensible,” he said.

Mohale and Mokone said that although they didn’t boo Zuma today, they saw nothing wrong with doing so because “he deserved it”.

But Thembi Masuku (42) from Kya Sands, north of Joburg, disagreed with the young men, saying South Africans had disgraced themselves in full view of the world.

“No matter how you disagree with each other you never air your dirty laundry in public,” she said.

“People should have given Zuma the respect he deserved as the president of the country. We elected him knowing all his faults and weaknesses. But to jeer him like that was totally wrong.”
