Movie Review – The politics of the unclean

2012-07-06 13:13

Sacha Baron Cohen gives late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and his son the satirical ass-whooping they and their ilk deserve in The Dictator.

Cohen plays Aladeen, a dictator who is the son of a dictator who is tricked out of his oppressed nation by a scheming uncle (played by Ben Kingsley).

While trying to stop his scheming uncle from bringing democracy to his nation, he gets saved by a bean sprout-growing, human rights champion (Anna Faris) who teaches him that giving people rights is the right thing to do.

Ridiculous in every way, the film has some very funny moments but, alas, Cohen – like all of his ilk – can’t resist the off-colour jokes.

Scenes such as his character being shown masturbating lower the bar and detract from Cohen’s smarter insights into political power.
