Movie review – Bridget Jones with a gun

2012-05-11 11:54

Film: One For The Money
(Nu Metro)
Director: Julie Anne Robinson
Featuring: Katherine Heigl, Jason O’Mara, Daniel Sunjata, Sherri Shepherd and Debbie Reynolds
Rating: 6/10

Author Janet Evanovich’s creation of lingerie salesperson turned bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is inspired. She’s like a rough and ready version of Bridget Jones – but with a gun and no idea how to use it.

On paper, Katherine Heigl is a slam dunk to play the part as the current darling of the Hollywood romcom and she does a pretty decent job – but I couldn’t help thinking that she should have “got” Plum more spot on.

You see, I have read all the Plum books and there are more than 20 of them., Plum is one of my favourite literary girlfriends and I too have a long-standing crush on Joe Morelli.

While Heigl may be a little off her bubbly game, the rest of the cast make up for it.

The casting agents have outdone themselves creating mysterious and deadly Ranger out of Daniel Sunjata and large and big-hearted Lula out of Sherri Shepherd, and Jason O’Mara seems to have worked hard at getting his Irish eyes to smile just right as Joe Morelli. O’Mara though needed more of a hit as his last TV outing in Terra Nova was a non-starter.

The premise of the first book is this: Plum is newly divorced and recently retrenched. With too many bills, no food and a repossessed car to her name, on the advice of her two-parts crazy Grandma Mazur (Debbie Reynolds is fabulous as this slightly overcooked old duck), she bribes her bail bondsman cousin Vinny to give her a job.

Not filing, but apprehending bail jumpers and the big fish is Morelli, the guy she “gave her canolli to in high school” and who seems to be a stone-cold killer.

Before long, Plum’s bumbled her way into a nest of vipers and has an entourage of bad guys on her tail.

With the help of fellow bondsman and all-round hottie Ranger, she manages to stay alive long enough to almost catch Morelli repeatedly.

One For The Money is a bit of frothy fun for a night out, and fans of the books will enjoy the novelty of seeing Plum’s native Trenton in New Jersey, the US.
