Movie review – Dream House

2011-11-25 12:04

This could have been a really good movie – pity about the second half. It seems the scriptwriter, David Loucka, had a wonderful idea, but nodded off before he’d worked out how to end the story realistically.

Film: Dream House (Nu Metro)

Director: Jim Sheridan

Featuring: Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts

Rating: 6/10

Daniel Craig takes a break from his spy wear to play Will Atenton, an editor who takes the plunge and leaves his city job to write a book and live in the country with his wife Libby (Rachel Weisz) and two children.

The family is very happy in their new home, but while redecorating, they find a few oddities and then discover that the previous family was brutally murdered.

Will decides to find out what happened and, more importantly, find the man accused of the killings. It seems he’s been freed from the local mental hospital.

Naomi Watts puts in an appearance as the neighbour who seems to know more than meets the eye and who is trying to deal with a very nasty ex-husband.

The film is directed by Jim Sheridan, which explains the talented cast. But the actors are fighting way below their creative weight classes in this so-so thriller.

Sheridan also fails with this film, which is bizarre considering he’s directed classic films such as My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father and In America.

Dream House is an example of a script that needed a lot more sculpting before being let loose on the paying public.
