Movie review – Even Brad is the Pitts in this

2013-08-04 14:00

Film: Killing Them Softly (Nu Metro)

Director: Andrew Dominik

Featuring: Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta and James Galdolfini

Rating: 3/10

For a little-known New Zealand director, Andrew Dominik is doing well.

Killing Them Softly is his second – of only four films – to feature the significant talents of A-lister Brad Pitt. But don’t be fooled, this is a 2012 film released in the midst of blockbuster season because it just isn’t going to fly.

The distributors probably expect little from it and will get less.

Pitt is a nasty assassin sent to clean up the mess when three idiots – a dry-cleaner, a junkie and an ex-convict – rob a mob-protected card game.

It’s not pretty.

Hell, not even Pitt looks pretty in this film. With a haze of filth, Dominik keeps the camera filming shades of urban grey that drive the audience to a sort of depressed distraction as people are tortured, beaten and die in detail that will turn your stomach.

Pitt previously starred in Dominik’s left-of-centre take on a classic American story, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which had its charms. This, though, has none.

For a film with such a good cast – Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta and the late James Galdolfini among them – it’s hard to believe it’s so awful, but it is.

Pitt fans would be better off seeing World War Z.

The zombies are easier to relate to than this cast of vermin.
