Movie review – Glossy good fun with super-special agent

2011-12-16 07:56

Film: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (UIP)
Director: Brad Bird
Featuring: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton and Michael Nyqvist
Rating: 8/10

Whether it’s the alien DNA or just really clever lighting and kind camera angles, I don’t know. But Tom Cruise looks damn good in his fourth outing as super-agent Ethan Hunt.

This franchise has produced just four films in the 15 years since the first one – and this one’s the best.

Hunt is rescued from a Russian prison (you guessed it) to save the world from certain destruction. The game is given extra fizz because the Russians think Hunt is responsible for an explosion at the Kremlin.

So the American state cuts him and his team loose. But they still expect Hunt to find the baddie, bag him and save the world.

British funnyman Simon Pegg keeps this light and makes sure that no one takes themselves too seriously.

Paula Patton is lovely and, best of all, she is no damsel in distress. Rounding out the cast is Jeremy Renner, the wildcard of the pack, and Michael Nyqvist is the Scandinavian badass.

The production on this film is great – it’s glossy and every frame seduces viewers into a world of impossible action and glamour.
