Film: Guardians of the Galaxy

Director: JamesGunn

Featuring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Dave Bautista and BradleyCooper

In a galaxy far, far away, a man stands with a woman staring out across Knowhere as he tells her about a hero called Kevin Bacon in a legendary story called Footloose. He then lets her listen to his Walkman (circa mid-1980s).

He’s Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), a vagabond on the run from jail. She’s Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a deadly assassin.

Their motley crew includes a genetically tangled talking raccoon called Rocket (BradleyCooper); a walking tree, Groot (Vin Diesel); and a fury-fuelled tattooed guy, Drax (Dave Bautista). None of them is interested in saving anything – least of all the galaxy. But the genocidal tendencies of Ronan (Lee Pace), who dresses like a Gregorian monk and has the make-up predilections of a Sith Warrior, get their attention.

This Marvel comic made its debut in 1969 and is about a crew who are all the last of their species. This is a bit depressing for the rest of us earthlings, but the film’s scriptwriters keep it upbeat and funny.

It all begins when Quill finds an ancient artefact that should fetch a good price on the black market, but it turns out to be just what Ronan is looking for to destroy Nova Prime’s (Glenn Close) Utopian planet and the peace treaty that created it.

Saldana is making a name for herself as the intergalactic go-to girl for space adventures, and Pratt was last set loose on the universe as the voice of Emmet in The Lego Movie.

Brewing somewhere out there is a mashup between the Asgardians and the Guardians. We can only hope. There’s nothing quite like a really cool new blockbuster to take the edge off real life.
