Movie review – Hammer loses its horror

2011-07-01 12:12

The Resident (Nu Metro) is the latest release from the resuscitated Hammer Horror films.

It doesn’t bode well for the production company, which hasn’t a hope of dominating the gore-and- scream markets again as it did during the 1950s with lukewarm offerings such as this one.

To add insult to injury the company’s finest bloodsucker, Sir Christopher Lee, has a bit part that does his legacy no good at all.

Perhaps film’s most recognisable villain – he personified Dracula, was the wicked wizard Saruman in Lord of the Rings, conniving Count Dooku in Star Wars and was James Bond’s nemesis Scaramanga in The Man With The Golden Gun – Lee is reduced to an old man peeping creepily around doors in this flick.

As for Hilary Swank’s career . . . well this, which she co-produced, shows that it’s in the toilet. The only horror here is to see a double Oscar winner willingly taking part in this silly film.

The two male leads, Jeffery Dean Morgan and Lee Pace, both got started on the small screen in Grey’s Anatomy and Pushing Daisies respectively. And if they keep taking big screen gigs like this one they will end up in made-for-TV movies on the Universal channel.

The Resident is about a young doctor who moves into a flat owned by a cute landlord, but he’s not what he seems – he’s a pervert of epic proportions.

The trouble is we never find out why he’s so twisted and without motivation, it’s all a bit pointless.

This is really not worth screaming home about.
