Movie review – Mean-spirited stupidity

2011-03-25 09:08

Film: Hall Pass (Nu Metro)
Directors: Bobby and Peter Farrelly
Featuring: Owen Wilson, Christina Applegate, Jenna Fischer, Jason Sudeikis and Richard Jenkins
Rating: 3/10

The heydays of Bobby and Peter Farrelly’s movie making are long gone.

Where are the men who made Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary?

Who are these plonkers whom I thought couldn’t offend me more than they did in the misogynistic Heartbreak Kid?

I was wrong, Hall Pass’ litany of tasteless jokes is almost endless.

It’s the story of two unattractive middle-aged men who spend their time lamenting the loss of their singledom.

Rick, Owen Wilson’s character, has a go at being a good husband and father, but it’s fake and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) is so awful if he fell in front of a truck women around the world would applaud.

These two fellows are given a hall pass by their long-suffering wives Maggie (Jenna Fischer) and Grace (Christina Applegate).

It means they have one week away from marriage to do whatever they want with whomever they like. Inevitably they are sure of their success with the ladies and start planning an array of increasingly ludicrous ways to get lucky.

Apart from the woman-hating starting point of the film, it degenerates even further by having one character whose only lines are to tell people about his bodily functions.

There’s also the endless sexual innuendo and the penis joke.

Hall Pass, with Wilson’s face smiling on from the poster, will fool some into thinking it’s a bit of fun for a Saturday night out.

My advice, spend the night washing your hair, rearranging the cutlery draw or packing the tool box according to spanner size rather than sit through this ode to mean-spirited stupidity.
